This sovereign coin tested as 12ct-13ct gold using a XRF scanner, significantly lower than the expected 22ct of a genuine sovereign.

Due to the different metal composition, counterfeit coins may weigh less than the expected 8 grams if made to the same size as a genuine sovereign. To compensate, they may produce these coins with extra thickness to match the correct weight (as seen below). When checking for authenticity, start by weighing the coin, if the weight seems accurate, be sure to also inspect its thickness. If you are ever unsure getting it properly tested can give you the best idea if a sovereign is genuine or not.

Fake coin on the left (thicker), real coin on the right.
