Wire fillings are an important factor to consider when buying gold by weight, as they artificially increase the overall mass and therefore the cost. A quick test is using a magnet, but this method isn’t foolproof, as some wire fillings (such as copper, lead, lower carat gold) are non-magnetic. This was the case with a bangle that recently came through our shop which was filled with copper and lead alloy.

Left magnetic wire | Right non-magnetic copper & lead alloy

The most reliable way to confirm a wire-filled bangle is to cut it open, especially if you’re planning to scrap it. This won’t affect its scrap gold value but ensures you’re not unknowingly paying for non-gold material. In many cases, the wire can be easily removed, allowing you to weigh the remaining gold accurately and determine its true value.
