A set of markings to watch out for are “Rolled Gold” and “Metal Core”. These may also appear in abbreviated forms such as “RG” or “RGP”. These stamps indicate that the item is not solid gold, but rather gold-plated, typically over a base metal like brass or copper.

You’ll find these markings on various types of jewellery, including chains, lockets, brooches and as shown in the examples below, bangles.

If you’re buying jewellery for scrap gold, it’s essential to be aware of these indicators. Despite the appearance of gold, these items contain only a thin layer, meaning their actual gold content and therefore their value is significantly lower than it may seem at first glance.

Since the thickness of the plating varies from piece to piece, assessing the gold content individually is challenging. For a more accurate valuation, it’s often recommended to collect a larger quantity of rolled gold or metal core items and melt them together.
