Metal fillings are an important factor to consider when buying gold by weight, as they artificially increase the overall weight and therefore the cost. This was the case with a bangle that recently came through our shop. The outer layer tested gold with our XRF machine but when it was realised to not be hollow, we cut into it to check and found the inside to have no gold.

The most reliable way to confirm whether a bangle is filled with non-gold metal is to cut it open, especially if you’re planning to scrap it. This won’t affect its scrap gold value, but it does ensure you’re not overpaying for hidden, non-gold material. Accurately valuing gold in filled bangles can be tricky, as the internal metals are often hard to separate. A common approach is to gather a larger quantity of metal-filled jewellery and perform a melt. This process melts everything down, allowing the gold content to be tested and the precise gold weight to be paid out accordingly.
